Clothes that breathe… and that let you breathe as well!

As the old adage goes: beauty is pain. Try telling yourself that in the dead of summer at a work event that is devoid of air conditioning, all the while trying to look glamorous, though the ‘glistening’ effect is really your make-up melting from the heat. It’s at that moment you realize that dress you chose to wear was the absolute worst choice in fabric and you are now paying the hefty price of discomfort. It is then a slippery slope from there: discomfort turns into fidgeting, which turns into a stagnant frown. And nobody looks pretty with a face like that. This is why you should be paying attention to fabrics and clothes that let you breathe this summer season. Scantly-clad doesn’t always mean ‘keeping cool’, especially when you’ve wrapped yourself in a material like Spandex or Lycra, the equivalent of a fashion death trap.

When it comes to breathable fabrics, let’s review, shall we? We can never go wrong with cotton, it’s durable, soft and it breathes well. But if we’re looking to up the glam, we of course want to seek out fabrics that have that alluring look with the same great properties of cotton. Keeping it in the plant family, we have what’s called modal, a cellulose fiber made by spinning reconstituted cellulose from beech trees. It is resistant to shrinkage and fading, lightweight and most importantly, has the smooth appearance of silk. Try the Mila Dress by Wolford, made of 89% modal, you’ll be able to breathe easy with this one.

Taking a look at our other summer-friendly textiles, we also have viscose, a synthetic fabric with a silky appearance and feel that has the same breathability as cotton. From the Wolford collection this Spring season, choose from the Lena dress, a 70s style number with a knit-ribbed effect that sits straight on the hips and is offset by a stylish white zip down the back.  For a more hip hugging number, spring for the Lia dress, also made with viscose for a delightfully lightweight option this summer season. With a more form fitting style, this lightweight fabric allows you to breathe all the same.

Not everybody likes the hourglass, leave-little-to-the-imagination dress, which is why the Elena Dress is a great option with plenty of room and a breezy fit, the characteristics of a classic sundress. Also made with 85% viscose, it’s a casual option for work or to be dressed up later with a pair of sexy open toes and some earrings.

Wherever you may find yourself this summer season, remember the heat does not have to be the be all and end all of your good mood. So keep cool, keep calm, and choose those threads wisely.
