June 2018, Bregenz – The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, right behind oil. As you read that sentence, approximately 3 truckloads of clothing were dumped globally – roughly one per second. In Germany alone, 800,000 tones of clothes are wasted each year. It’s time for change. It’s time for us to change. It’s time for us to break the habit, together.
Our engineering masterminds have had their heads together for over 4 years now on how to make the next step towards a brighter future for all of us. In our 68 years, sustainability has always been part of our DNA, always at the core of our thinking, driving us to get better and to be better. In our fast-moving world, we believe fashion can go further at a slower pace. Sustaining a fashion-forward mindset without acceleration, means you and your wardrobe can go further at a slower pace. A sustainable pace, one that will take care of our planet.
This linear economy is the most common system in the fashion industry currently. From cradle to grave: Take. Make. Waste. The resources of our planet are not endless and we need to be mindful of their usage. The Cradle to Cradle ® approach tackles this issue to lead us to a sustainable, circular economy. All ingredients used in the production are kept in an endless life cycle – Never touching the bin.
We reviewed our entire production process in order to meet the Cradle to Cradle® standards. Each design is developed with the intention to bring the ingredients back to the cycle. Instead of taking new materials, we simply borrow them for the lifetime of your product.
Our first Wolford Cradle to Cradle Certified™ on gold level products will hit stores this September. Starting with a pair of leggings and a pullover this collection will be extended season by season. With these pieces, we have created magic in fusing our iconic wearable comfort and durability with the Cradle to Cradle® approach.
This collection can be smoothly adapted to any wardrobe or outfit; empowering you to stand up for a brighter future, without sacrificing your look.
After their life cycle with you naturally comes to an end, we will return them to an industrial composting station and those smart ingredients will close the loop and begin a new life as nutrients for our planet, such as humus and bio gas.
Now for the tricky part… The Aurora pieces are made up of three fibers. For the biological cycles both the pullover and the leggings are made from Tencel™ Modal by Lenzing AG, – a cellulosic fiber derived from sustainable forestry, together with the specially modified oil based biodegradable polymer – infinito® by Lauffenmühle – and a special ROICA™ premium smart yarn, which on top of high stretch performance is able to degrade without releasing any harmful substances. All of these components comply with safe standards for biological cycles.
The development of these products and materials required extensive research on colorants and textile chemicals, qualified safe for biological cycles by the Material Health Assessment supported by the accredited assessor EPEA Switzerland, for the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ certification.
“We are very proud to be able to launch the first Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products in fashion industry, yet we are just at the beginning of our journey. But finally we are able to take sustainability to the next level, for a world beyond next season.”, Andreas Röhrich, Director, Product Development, Product Management & Textile Sourcing.
Let’s close the loop together, for a world beyond next season.
